Once upon a time, I was a fine art student. I had a few disagreements with my tutors at the time, you see, it was one of those courses where you have to do rotations, through different art mediums, such as sculpture, ceramics, graphics. Well, I was told I was suited to graphics (fair play, they were right), but refused to let me do my chosen subject of fine art. I wanted to continue figure drawing classes and learning textures, etc, before commiting to Graphics. After I bugged them enough, they eventually let me on for being 'persistent', but proceeded to make my life hell. Got to love art tutors- no wonder people get scared early on and think they can't do art!!
So anyway, they hated the way I drew, so... I started making sculpture, and drawing in my spare time. Believe me, I'm stubborn, and not a quitter. But they were being unreasonable, and not giving me constructive critiscm, just ..hell... soooo... my favourite thing to do was to make big sculptures then proceeded to sit in them and draw for the rest of term. As you can imagine, they loved me. That's me, compromising ;)
Anyway, I did enjoy sculpture, and did a few pieces in my time at college. No hard feelings on the hapless tuors, I'm doing well, they're stuck teaching, and they taught me to fight and compromise. Without further ado, here's some examples of my sculpture work -
This is project I did about mermaids. I'm a Tori Amos fan, and the piece was based on the lyrics of two of her songs;
"Doubting if there's a woman in there somewhere,
here,
here,
here."
This is the concept work to a piece I did about sacred circles, and the belief of physical and spiritual protection by having faith. It had a domestic voience theme to it too. Here's the studio work I did for it beforehand. I find that even working with small projects, I like to 'nest', spread myself and my work around before compacting it to it's final size.
Here's the final piece created -
I continued this theme into an animation short a few years later, and you can go see stills from it here.
